EDF! EDF!

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Finished off Earth Defence Force for the Xbox 360 over the weekend, which involved shooting missiles & guns at lots of giant bugs from outer space. Quite possibly the most fun I’ve had on the 360 this year, I found it really hard not to sit & smile as I played it – it’s a cheesy Godzilla inspired 3rd person shooter with a very knowing dub & presentation. Whoever translated it from Japanese really knows their audience.

EDF has lousy production values. Slowdown to single digital frame rates is not uncommon. Models are low poly & poorly animated. And none of the matters because of the joy of blowing up wave after wave of giant bugs & destroying every building in the large maps.

In a lot of ways, it’s like Crackdown – take an existing genre & focus on the core elements that are fun rather than attempting to throw in everything & the kitchen sink.

I like.
